Keratoconus is a progressive condition causing the Cornea of the eye to become weak and irregular. This irregularity causes the vision to be poor.
To make the Cornea more regular, plastic inserts maybe implanted into channels created by a femtosecond laser.
There are various plastic inserts available (Kerarings,Intacs,Intacs SK,Ferrara rings) all with slightly different cross sectional shapes and available in varying sizes. The product used and the size selected will depend upon your degree of keratoconus and the power of your eye (refraction) including the astigmatism (curvature of the eye).
Often a combination of treatments are required in Keratoconus.Initially Collagen cross linking is used to stabilise the Keratoconus, then Intra corneal rings produce a more regular cornea and finally a phakic lens may be used to correct any residual ametropia ( short or long sightedness) and astigmatism (curvature of the eye).
These treatments have a good chance of improving the vision in keratoconus either singly or in combination. The risks and benefits for you will be discussed at your consultation.
